FC CLACTON manager Kieron Shelley is convinced his side can stay up this season – and believes it is only a matter of time before they start “causing upsets”.

The Seasiders took the lead before sliding to a 2-1 defeat against Felixstowe and Walton in their latest Thurlow Nunn League premier division match on Tuesday night.

It was in stark contrast to the horrors of Saturday’s club-record 10-0 defeat at Kirkley and Pakefield.

And with that disaster out of their system, Shelley was delighted with his side’s response and felt that they were unfortunate to lose.

“Felixstowe are an experienced side and they were buzzing when they arrived, because of what they’d done in the FA Cup on Saturday (beating Bishop’s Stortford to make the third qualifying round),” he said.

“However, my boys worked their socks off for 90 minutes.

“They listened to what I wanted them to do and were in it until the very last kick.

“On Saturday we were absolutely demolished at Kirkley.

“Our pride was on the floor but this was an unbelievable difference and things are starting to take shape.

“We’ve got a plan and we’ve got something we can work with.

“Eventually something will happen and we’ll start picking up points.

“Hopefully it’s not too late for us. I don’t think it is – we’re only nine games in. There are loads of points to be played for.

“We’re a team that are going to be causing upsets.

“Give this side another few weeks of working and training together and they’ll start picking up points.

“Sooner or later someone’s going to come here and get turned over.

“The signs are there that the boys are taking things in and that in four, five or six weeks’ time, I could be standing here talking and we’ve got 10 points on the board.

“Then we’re not far behind the pack.”

Steve Hope headed Clacton into the lead but Felixstowe quickly levelled and then grabbed their winner from the penalty spot early in the second half, after a foul by Jimmy Shuttlewood.

Clacton are next in action at Hullbridge Sports, in the Essex Senior Cup, on Tuesday.
